Kings Dominion

It has been awhile since I posted, and I am very back logged.

Last summer we went to Kings Dominion.  It is an amusement park that is located in Doswell, VA; approximately, 20 minutes outside of Richmond.  We hadn’t been there in almost 10 years.  A lot had changed, but a lot was the same.  For one, it was no longer Paramount’s Kings Dominion .  Going there used to be the high light of my summer, and I was always envious of my friends that had season passes.  I can remember many a end of school year party there hoping that my latest crush would want to ride on a ride with me.  Oh the drama!

I LOVE roller coasters!  One of my favorites was the Big Bad Wolf at Busch Gardens, but it was taken down a few years ago for a newer roller coaster 😦  The coasters that I used to love so much as Kings Dominion were the wooden ones: The Rebel Yell, The Grizzly, and The Hurler.  The Rebel Yell used to have one train of cars facing forward, and one facing backwards.  I loved being the train facing backwards,  but the day we went they only had the train of cars facing forward going, so I don’t know if they do the train of cars facing backwards anymore. However, I think I may be getting old, because when I went on those roller coasters this time I felt like I got beaten up.   But the coaster that I got the worst bruises on was The Shockwave.  It is a stand up coaster, and I had bruises on the insides of my arms from the harness.

The one ride that I really wanted to go on was The Intimidator 305. So we went there first when we got inside the park.  I, literally, almost blacked out after the initial 305′ drop.  After that everything was a blur, but it was awesome!  It was crazy good!  Luckily, the line wasn’t too long, so we were able to go a second time without waiting.

From there we went to Flight of Fear.  It reminds me of Space Mountain at Disney World.  It is inside, and is a launched coaster.  I remember it being a bumpier ride, but it was smoother than I remembered.  I do, vaguely, remember hearing something about components of it being changed at one time.  Well, whatever they did to make it less bumpy worked.

The Hurler

The Hurler, another wooden roller coaster.  I didn’t get to go on it this time because they were having problems with it.  I have been on it before though.

The Pizza Parlor

When I was little we used to get pizza at the Pizza Parlor.  There used to be a lake behind it, and we would watch the water skiers do their jumps on the ramps while we ate.

The Berserker

The Berserker always scared me.  You get in and it rocks back and forth until you are upside down.  When you are at the top it stops for a few seconds.

Dominator

The Dominator was also new since we were last there.  The cars are floorless and wider than the track giving the riders on the outside a sense of almost like flying.

Backlot Stunt Coaster

The Backlot Stunt coaster was new since we were last there.  It is a launched coaster.  It takes you along what looks like a Hollywood backlot.

Avalanche

I love the Avalanche!  If I remember correctly, it was introduced after the 1988 or 1992 winter Olympics.  The track really is like a bobsled track, and the riders recline in the cars.  Because there are no rails along the track the car can move side to side like a real bobsled, and the ride is so smooth.

Crypt

The Crypt has a very Indiana Jones feel.  It is almost like the Berserker in that in rocks you back and forth until you are upside down at the top; the difference in the whole apparatus spins on its axis like a rotisserie.

Anaconda

I remember when the Anaconda opened.  On one of those end of school year field trips, I waited in line 2 hours to ride it.  It goes over the lake that used to have the water skiing shows.  The track, actually, goes under the water through a tunnel before going into the first loop.

Volcano

The Volcano is another launched coaster.  I did not get to ride it this time because it was having problems like the Hurler, and that made the line very long.  It used to be the mountain that they used for the haunted river log ride.  The ride goes from a dead stop and launches you up through the top of the mountain into a corkscrew spiral.  The cars hang below the track so your feet are dangling.  From what I remember, it was super fun.
